for Sasha_Anu
For Sasha, a Vanyel and Stefen ficlet. (From Lackey's the Last Herald-Mage trilogy)
Set between "I only hope that nothing makes you eat those words."
Was it only a few months ago I said that?"
Van snapped awake at the sound of too-quiet movement too close, hand snapping out as he rolled sideways--
--and a low, easy voice met his ears. "Easy, Van, easy... it's just me."
His head started to clear, pulse settling as his jangled nerves eased. "Stef. Sorry, love... I must have fallen asleep..."
"Who's surprised? I stayed late with the King, while you've been working on that problem in the southeast the last week... I knew you'd be asleep. Was trying not to wake you." He could hear the easy smile on Stef's lips, and at the sound of clothing moving, Van re-lit the candles with a thought.
"Next time wake me. You nearly got hurt..."
"You wouldn't hurt me."
//Such faith...// He sat up to watch as Stef stripped out of his Scarlets and pushed the covers away as the Bard crawled onto the bed, smile going hungry as he leaned down.
Van was only too happy to give the kiss, hands sliding up into Stef's dark auburn hair as the man he was still getting used to having in his arms and his life settled over him. He'd never thought he'd be so grateful for his mother's whims.
