Meme

1. Comment to this post.
2. I will give you a letter.
3. Think of 5 fictional characters and post their names and your comments on these characters in your LJ.

So, [livejournal.com profile] icarus_chained gave me "D".

1. Duncan MacLeod – I actually prefer his kinsman, Connor, but I love Duncan, too. The now 416-year-old Highlander kind of snuck into my heart quite a while ago. He's occasionally arrogant, sometimes reckless, and a perfectionist who was put together with chivalry instead of bones... but I love him to death. Because he's passionate, honest, driven, determined, and loyal beyond measure to those he loves. Because he loves so hard and grieves so hard when he loses his mortal loves (as he must), and other than that nasty incident of possession, he never stops doing his best to be a good man. He was raised to be clan chieftain, and that colors everything he does. Which sometimes makes me want to smack him, but mostly not, because he tries so hard to be a good leader and friend and protector. By the way, I'm something of a member of the Clan Denial about that last season.

2. Duncan Idaho – another Duncan I love madly. This Duncan's from Dune, rather than Highlander. And again, one of the reasons I love him so much is his passionate, driven loyalty. Duncan served two of the Atreides lords in his first life, and two in his reincarnated (and then many other) lives. He's a fabulous swordsman, an ex child-slave who escaped from his captors only to become something amazing, and the one person in the entire Atreides dynasty (barring possibly Leto I) who never loses sight of what it means to be Atreides: to love justice, to rule well, to be the servant of the people you rule.

(gee, can you tell why my OC has the name he does?)

3. Drizzt Do'Urden – the rogue dark elf from Menzoberranzan who was never supposed to be a main character. *laughs* That will never stop entertaining me. When Salvatore wrote the Icewind Dale trilogy, Wulfgar was supposed to be the hero. Um... the fans kind of thought differently, and it's Drizzt that got his own prequel trilogy, the four-novel Legacy of the Drow series, appearances in the cleric quintet, the Lone Drow trilogy, and a couple of other books. I've adored him and his gently sarcastic, overly-noble, beautifully dangerous self since the first time I picked up one of the books. I love that he proves that even when raised by evil, you can still know good (and yet recognize necessity), and I love most of the choices he makes to become one heck of a hero and a champion. I apparently have a thing for swordsmen (and women). Gee, who would have guessed?

4. Del – of Tiger and Del fame. The northern sword-mistress (which in their world shouldn't even exist) to Tiger's Southern sword-master; wielder of ice and storm and magic; dangerous, dangerous broken damaged woman... I'm very fond of Del. I also frequently want to strangle her, because there are moments she takes man-hating feminist about a hundred miles too far. She's... okay, she makes Tarma look soft, most of the time, and I didn't think that was possible. But she grows up, slowly and painfully and with a whole lot of struggle along the way, which is another reason to love her.

5. Dominic Toretto – of tF&tF fame. I think I fell for Dom the second I saw him stand up and come prowling out of the back of the grocery store, all that gorgeous skin and broad muscle and slow dark drawl of a voice.... and the rest of the film just made me fall harder. He's loyal and protective and just this once a little too trusting and all this stubborn strength—until you see the scared boy under it all. Morality would say I shouldn't like Dom; I tell it to jump off a cliff. Now yeah, I wish he hadn't decided that boosting trucks was a good way to pick up extra cash, admittedly. But compared to some of the other things he could have been doing, I prefer the crime that doesn't directly harm anyone else.

And then [livejournal.com profile] merfilly gave me A.

Alessan – of Pern fame. Lord Holder who could have been a bronze rider, but his father wouldn't let him go. Playful and almost reckless by nature, uncaring of a Lord Holder's dignity—though never uncaring of his duty—and the man who fell in love with the best damn queen rider Fort Weyr had had since Sorka... and then so shattered by so much tragedy. Alessan makes me hurt, and weep, and throw things at the walls for his pain, but the man never gives up.

Adeline – I think anyone that reads me knows Addie Wilson, nee Kane, by now. But I adore that woman so hard, except when I want to knock her head in over Slade. I love that she was a special ops teacher. I love that she could and did beat sense into several dozen young men who thought they were the best in the business over a few years. And I even love how much she proved that the female is the more deadly of the species. But one of these days I find an explanation for all of the screwed-up things that happened that are at least as much her fault as Slade's.

Aditu – wait a second, didn't I just write about her? Aditu is Jiriki's slightly younger sister. Mysterious, fey, dangerous, beautifully nonhuman, wickedly humorous... I kind of love her a lot. She rescues our darling main character, plays with him, teases him sometimes--but she's willing to help him, too. Okay, yeah I did, but not all that much. I like Aditu for all the ways she is utterly and totally not human and not safe and very female and very powerful.

Aerin Fire-Hair – Heroine of Hero and the Crown, which everyone and their dog needs to read. Aerin is a princess, but she's not like most. Her mother was a witch, her father has about no time for her, and she didn't even have the courtesy to have the family kelar (gift)--or so everyone thought. So while she was being almost entirely ignored, she took her father's lamed war-horse and learned how to ride, then taught herself how to hunt the nasty little dragons that were making trouble for her people. She's stubborn and strong and more than a little dangerous and oh, so human... except for the part where she's... not.

Amanda – Of Highlander fame. Cat-burglar without compare, decent swordswoman though she'd rather not fight, charming little minx of a woman who can't stay out of trouble to save her life... What's not to love? She's a great recurring character, a delightful breath of fresh air in Duncan's sometimes far too noble life, and just plain fun.

[livejournal.com profile] courtcat79 Apparently decided to try and stump me with a U. But I persevered.

Well, right off the bat,
Uncle Sam (DC comics): Oh, that poor man. I admit, I'm talking mostly about the 1997 mini, but I love that book so hard. Spirit of all the best of this nation, broken and mostly insane on a streetcorner as an old homeless man, who slowly remembers who he is and what he's supposed to stand for. What he's supposed to be, and takes on the worst aspects of what's been done in his name. Heartbreaking and inspiring by turns, he's a hell of a character.

Ultra Magnus (G1): Rock-solid, generous, excellent fighter, an awesome second in command who never wanted to be in the leadership position... an all around awesome guy—if "guy" can be applied to a 30-odd foot Autonomous Robotic organism.

Uloa – one of the original eighteen dragonriders of Pern, and a pretty neat girl all on her own. One of the women who wound up junior-status to a younger rider (Torene of Benden), and didn't have a lick of trouble with it. Matter of fact, she was pretty happy to have all of that responsibility fall on someone else—which is a lot how I'd take it, thanks all the same. Though I'd rather ride green than gold anyway!

Urameshi, Yuusuke – of Yuu Yuu Hakusho fame. I can't help liking him, even if I think he's a damned hotheaded punk. Hotheaded punk with a heart of gold, though, and his surprising willingness to sacrifice himself for others is pretty freaking lovable.

Uther – of the classic Pendragon myths, not the Bradley retelling. Because the Uther of the classic series, while a bit of an ass, was a strong leader and mostly a good man, just with a bit of a David complex when it came to the woman he wanted. Also, Us are hard to think of!

*grin* I only met Drizzt briefly, when I found one of the books hiding on the floor in a stack at a pokey old second-hand (I love those places). I kinda like him. A lot.

Wanna give me one back? But I won't get it done for a couple of days because I'se a-goin away tomorrow.

I am now stupidly wondering if Japanese names apply. I think my name's threatening to fault out on the family/given-kanji complications. =P

I love Duncan and Alessan, too, for those same reasons. They make my heart hurt...I still can't listen to "Dust in the Wind" without crying; and when I ran across a fic that retold the ending of "Moreta", and it was plausible, I immediately leapt on that for my person canon, book bedamned!

They make me hurt too. OH, Dust in the Wind will always be Tessa's Song to me, no matter what.

Oooh, what fic, what fic? I don't suppose it's a small enough world that you mean my darling [personal profile] senmut's AU?
realpestilence: (Default)

[personal profile] realpestilence 2010-11-12 03:06 am (UTC)(link)
I can't find the link in my memories, which means it was either from some meme; or, more likely, at AO3, which is down right now, so I can't check it.

But it was about how Moreta and Holth had been so tired they got stuck in time, and everyone just ~thought they were dead, until the dragons faintly heard them. They found their way back home. A wonderful secondary plot had Alessan and Nerilka come to an understanding; and Nerilka and Moreta dealing with each other. It was very believable.

Dang, now I wish I could find it again! I read so much, and between all the various journals and sites, I can't always keep track of what's where.

*grins* that would be my [personal profile] senmut's moving forward again. Did you see the art? It's at the bottom of the fic.

Yes, that it! \0/

I must have read it at the Archive, because her name looks familiar. So annoying that it's down right ~now, when I want to look, after all these month of my ignoring it.
