Diane Duane authored one of my all time favorite TNG books, Dark Mirror. It's a story that sets our Enterprise with the Mirror Universe Enterprise and their respective counterparts. In that book, she wrote what I consider to the one of the Great Truths for anyone who works under rules and regulations made by those who sit in offices miles away: "What desk jockey ever correctly evaluated a field situation?"
