I live where 2/3rds of the entire population is insane from poison gas let alone the people who've seen people eaten alive, had family hauled off by the government or went through the war.
You don't recover because it just keeps getting forced on you day in and day out. When the hospitals are run by the government and mental illness is punishable by imprisonment or worse. No one gets help. You just give up on getting better if it ever does happen.
