Loved it, so much. I'm so glad that there was finally some true tension between Dick and Slade. There needed to be for this whole story to be believeable. The fact that they are still somewhat steamed at each other is good.
I'm glad that Rose was able to calm Slade down and that Roy was able to do the same for Dick though, too much tension would have led to disaster very quickly.
Let's start with Slade hitting Dick. It lets him know exactly where he stands and why he's there. It's not overly violent but still enough so to shake Dick up a lot.
Slade's demand to know everyone is exactly like Batman's. I'm so glad you put that in there and had it press Dick's buttons because that is about the only thing that could cause Dick to snap.
You. Fucking. didn't." Never in all of the years Slade had known Dick had he ever heard that tone from the boy's mouth. No one ever had. It was Batman's voice with a killer's edge, black ice and the howling of a midnight sandstorm. It was Renegade's voice in the full grip of a killing rage--and it was turned with lethal intent on his own master for his lover's sake.
This paragraph was great. To see Dick being everything that everyone has tried to mold him into but failed all coming out at once for the sake of someone he loves was just great.
"When he asked, to protect you from his slower reactions, who was I to deny him?"
I think this is my favorite line in the whole fic. It comes at a point where they are so angry at each other but Slade still, somehow, manages to throw in the hint that he cares about Dick.
ask yourself if you think he would have been safe without every advantage we can give him?"
This is a very good point on Slade's part. Roy wouldn't have been safe without every advantage and Dick needs to realize that.
I already mentioned that I was glad that Rose managed to calm Slade down. He needed it and she was the perfect person to do it. Her concern for her budding family was also very well placed and shows her growing maturity. I'm also glad that he brought her up to date and they started going over things, and that he's starting to see the hidden agendas that were floating around him.
