I need to remember that bradygirl-12's question posts make my brain asplode. She's got a question up about 'your first slash ship' to commemorate the 41st anniversary of Trek, and I went to answer, and got veryvery confused.

So I'm going to ramble, and feel free to chip in once I get through running my mouth--fingers?

I've been trying to think about it, and I think that honestly, my first slash ship is/was probably Betsy-Tacy, from the book series of the same name. Apparently there are more books than my Grandma had, and they go all up through HS and Betsy getting married (NOES!!!!!), but those two were so very together.

Then, of course, Bess and George from Nancy Drew, and once the Nancy Drew/Hardy Boys crossovers came out, Ned and Frank in the antagonistic pairing from hell. I didn't ship them, but I wanted to see that at least once. huh. It's gotta be out there somewhere. *makes note*

I don't have access right now to the rest of my kids books, though I'm sure I had other couples in--omg Stevie/Carol from the Saddle Club! Couple-couple-couple!

Why were all of my ships as a wee thing femslash?

*jumps over to TV shows-cartoons, I mean*

Scooby-Doo, Daphne/Velma. Velma was so much better for her than Fred!

Nobody I can remember on He-Man and/or She-Ra, though hello twincest, thank you Pervy! *adores that series possibly too much*

I never shipped anyone in TMNT, because, um, brothers, no. (*eyes TMNT fandom she found as an adult, shakes head at own innocence*)

X-Men (TV, 1990s?) Storm and Jean. I wanted the two of them to be so much closer. Though I might have settled for Storm and Rogue--though oh, man, did I ship Rogue and Gambit like Whoa. Bitty fangirl of Squee.

The Real Ghostbusters: Um... the whole team just needed to be together.

Skeleton Warriors... okay. There's a 'cest pairing. Prince Lightstar/Grimskull. They needed to make up, damn it!

Books: Mercedes Lackey, M.Z. Bradley, and anything else I could get my hands on. Hello canonslash, and no matter how crazy those two women are, I will always love them for that.

Okay, I think that's grade school...

Jr. High... Buffy started (Angel/Spike). I started reading LJ Smith (Rob/Gabriel, too many others). I got access to a friends cable and my mother got an internet connection and I became addicted to Sailormoon (Usagi/Rei, Haruka/Michiru, Hotaru/Chibi-Usa (don't give me that look! As adults!!), DBZ (Vegeta/Goku, Piccolo/Gohan, Goten/Trunks, etc, etc), Ronin Warriors (teamfic, Ryo/Seiji, any), etc. While also being addicted to X-Files fic. Hi Mulder/Krychek. How do I blend those? I don't know.

On the topic of those animes, HELLO Yaoi/yuri everywhere.

I can't even list from that point. Me and a net connection? I go everywhere.
tF
Oh, yes, I can. Gundam. Wing. Hello prettypretty bois with Isssues that just needed to be together. I converted wholeheartedly.

And somewhere shortly after I got hooked on GWing I went back to reading comic books... and Dick and Roy, Dick and Bruce, Dick and Slade, Donna and Kory, Vic and Gar, and all of the other Titan pairings attack pounced me. I mean, I'd read as a kid. I quit for a while, got distracted, lost access, I don't remember why... but *BOOM*. I got my hands on as much canon as I could, devoured character history pages, and was completely hooked all over again.

Then tF&tF, and Oceans 11, and wait, people write stuff about these? I want!

Yeah, I'm kind poly about my shippiness, can you tell yet?

Oh, god, books again, I want slash in the pern novels (queen/queen (outside flights), bronze/green, brown/green, non-rider), and I always wanted John and Ding in the Tom Clancy books--until Ding married one of John's daughters... um. *blink*

Seriously? Which series?

Oh, god, I own and loved all of them - I still even have the Heart of Valor two-part series - though my favorites were the Vampire Diaries (*sigh* Damian) and Night World (I am a sucker for vampires and blatant romanticism, apparently). And I really liked Dark Visions, and oh! Forbidden Game rocked (Oh, Julien, you sexy devil) and Secret Circle... I need to dig these books out.

Night World's how I found fanfic - the final book never came out, I was doing google searches, found people writing their own versions, and - even though it was a Mary Sue-laden fandom with more than its share of badfic - loved every moment. My first internet-viewed fics were terrible Night World-based atrocities. There are still two authors in that fandom I read and adore like mad, in fact.

I feel very naive! I read all those kids books totally innocently. *G* Reading the Pern books that were out when I was a teen it never connected in my brain that blues flying greens meant male/male sex.

Even though I wrote m/m and f/f in high school, they weren't fictional characters. When I started writing fictional characters, I never wrote samesex, never even saw it, outside of OFC and Rogue and that had more to do with the fact that Rogue could touch the character.

Outside of Darkover (canonslash, oh god thank you Marion, and you are missed) I didn't discover fictional slash until online fandom nine years ago and, before that, had never heard the term slash.

Back in the old days of comics, my mind never wandered to samesex 'ships.

Fandom has corrupted me! lolol

I don't think my brain was ever innocent. *shrug*

Hey, I'm not complaining that you got corrupted, for a certainty!

*vigorously nods head in agreement*

Just commented in her post, but now that I think about it more, I guess that the first ship that I *really* got into without even realizing it was Vanyel/Tylendel(Stephan) in the Last Herald Mage series.

The slash was there but for some reason it didn't truly click that the pairing was two guys in my head, even as I was cheering for them. lol

*shakes head*

Ahh, the naivette of youth.

*giggles* Oh, it landed on me because I was starting to notice I liked girls about the time I read the books.

But yeah.

I liked your Betsy-Tacy reference but it was impossible to follow any one train of thought.

Yeah, don't worry about Betsy getting married... she and Tacy stay about the same... and the author's been quoted as saying that when the real-life "Tacy" died, it was harder on her than when her own husband died... lovely, yes?

I always seem drawn to the pairins that are rare, or, when I do find them, either badly-done, or the character I love best is written as a jerk or something. WOE! D:

I am bewildered sometimes at McCaffrey's inclusion of gay or bi characters in her works. She includes them, which is good; and they're normally good people, or are doing something important, etc, which is also good. But she writes them as...idk, bitchy, or issue-ridden, or just ~off, somehow, you know? o.0

I'd give a lot for a good blue-green, brown-green, bronze-green pairing that were both written as stable, interesting men, and an important part of the story. K'lon in "Moreta" came close, but we never got to see A'murray.

Over in AI, I've been badgering people to write me a ~male queenrider fic, and we did get a tiny ficlet in one of the kink memes that was excellent, as far as it went. K'ris, the character that accidentally Impressed a queen, got a lot of shit for it that made you just long to protect him and kick ass, lol. But it wasn't long, and it never got to the mating flight or any consequences! D:

Do you know how HARD it is to find good Scott-oriented X-Men fics? Most of the fics with him in them seem to be written by Wolverine fans, and even the writers who like him don't seem to know much more about him than we saw in the movies-not much canon info-and it annoys the heck out of me.

Fanfic can be so addictive, and it's difficult feeding the craving, isn't it? :D

Oh, man, that is so much woe!!!

Heh. McCaffrey's views of human sexuality are from the middle ages. She's said some truly horrific things about it, which makes her including them so totally bizzare.

AI? *is curious* Heh. I know of one good male queenrider series over on AO3, and it's a fusion with Marvel (Tony Stark as the goldrider).

Scott is a very hard character to find good fic for. I have a hard time with him myself, I admit.

OHhhhh yes, it is totally addictive.

that's from the American Idol fandom, if you're not familiar with AI. Even if you don't know who they are, it's still good-and I wish the writer had continued it; but from what she said, she's new at this and was nervous.
