From here.

Slade shook his head and picked up his cell phone, sending a text meassage to his son, daughter, wife, and lover, just in case any of them decided to come by the penthouse in the next couple of hours. [Ex-robin crashed on the couch.]

//Now, start thinking about how in hell you're going to explain to Wintergreen that you offered the boy a job, Wilson.//

Her mouth quirked in a smile, shifting her stance to something approaching gentle. If she was going to persuade the child to stay, she would require gentleness. No skittish horse ever came to an angry rider. "Surely you wouldn't ask me to turn away kin from the dinner table."

Jason tilted his head, "I'm nothin' to you, ma'am."

He wasn't much of anything to anyone.

Adeline heard Slade snort next to her, but he said nothing so she ignored it. "Your adoptive father's mother was my first cousin, which makes you my first cousin twice removed."

Jason tilted his head, so he was... the disowned, dead second cousin? "Uhm." he wasn't really certain what to say to that, and he shifted his kit up onto his shoulder, and of course it dug straight into his back again. Ow, that hurt.

Her expression remained smooth, despite the boy's very faint flinch as his evac bag shifted. "You could, at the very least, let one of us look at your injuries again."

The flick of her hand at her side signaled Slade to fall back, and the stroke of his fingers along her wrist as he retreated to the kitchen indicated agreement and acceptance.

Jason shifted his weight on his feet, "I don't want to be any trouble, ma'am... I just was dropping something off for Slade." Wilson retreated into the kitchen, leaving him with her.

She seemed like a nice lady... and dinner? he was hungry. He'd gotten a good feed in at Babs, but that'd been about a week and a half ago, and he hadn't had a chance to go back. "Dinner sounds good, though." he gave in.

"I'm okay." he clung to the scrap of pride he had left.

"Which we appreciate, and should repay you for.

"Slade would hardly have offered you a job had he thought you incapable. Which does not alter that you are less effective when you are injured, and should take advantage of friendly territory."

Jason grinned, this woman thought like a Bat.

"Slade already patched me up." he said as he let his duffle off his shoulder to hang from his hand, taking a step back into the room. "Got the worst of it."

Now that the adrenaline from his dream was wearing off he felt shaky again... worse than before, actually. He knew this feeling, and was not pleased. He'd pass out soon if he wasn't careful. He took another step and leaned against a piece of furniture casually, though he was trusting it with nearly half his weight.

Adeline smiled back, but it was, this time, a sharper expression. "He has sufficient experience with injuries that he should know. I would still prefer to re-check when you leave."

Especially since Adeline was familiar with that sort of waver in someone's stance. The child needed food badly, and another nap.

It was easier to agree than not to, and the lines of her mouth said she was used to being agreed with. "Yes'm." he said, letting his bag down to the floor.

He ran a hand through his hair, bemused as to how he'd ended up sleeping on Wilsons' couch and he'd be eating dinner with them? Good lord, he should run now... except he was tired, and really, food. Food was a very good idea.

Slade listened from the kitchen as Addie gentled the boy down, throwing together a quick meal. It didn't take long to throw a salad together while he was already working in the kitchen. Put that out on the table in the serving bowl. The pasta intended for a couple of days later could be served the same way and let the boy take however much he wanted, which went for the alfredo sauce thick with chopped chicken currently heating on the range. The vegetables closest to hand turned out to be green beans, which went into a pot with a piece of ham shank to cook.

That would be good enough, just as soon as it all finished heating.

Jason dipped his head to the lady and lifted his bag enough to not drag as he went to the kitchen. Alfred'd taught him manners, after all...

"C'n I help?"

"I've got it, Todd, but thank you," Slade said over his shoulder. "Shouldn't be but a few more minutes. Go on and sit down."

Jason shifted his weight, "Okay." he said, heading for the table Slade'd indicated with his head. He took a seat to the side, with his back to the wall, facing the door, his bag behind him on the floor. He felt awkward, out of place and if he weren't so hungry he'd've said thanks, no thanks.

That, and the lady seemed not to want to take no for answer when it came to hospitality.

The food smelled wonderful, making the hunger pangs he could usually ignore come back with a vengeance.
