From here.

Slade shook his head and picked up his cell phone, sending a text meassage to his son, daughter, wife, and lover, just in case any of them decided to come by the penthouse in the next couple of hours. [Ex-robin crashed on the couch.]

//Now, start thinking about how in hell you're going to explain to Wintergreen that you offered the boy a job, Wilson.//

"I'll eat just 'bout anything. Just didn't like it, still ate it." he tilted his head,

"I wouldn't much like the mask, though I can see why ya wore it." he kept his opinions about all the good it'd done solidly behind his teeth. "I hated my stupid helmet thing, so I stopped wearing it. I'm back to my identity band-aid mask, not that anybody knows or cares who I am... although I still don't really exist in the system."

"I'd have been a lot better off if someone I thought was a friend hadn't blown my cover," Slade answered the look there.

"Mmm. I am not surprised that you're not. That's not that hard to fix, if you've got access to a decent hacker. Expensive, but do-able. And you'd need it to be able to travel."

Jason tilted his head, "Why do I got the feeling said alleged friend is no longer on this plane of existence?"

"Yeah." Jason agreed. He knew if he wanted he could have everything he needed from Babs in a few minutes, but, travelling, well... oh, fuck it, he'd drug himself... "I don't travel real well." hell, he didn't like cars!

"Considering that he helped the Jackal get hold of Joe, helped the HIVE recruit Grant, tried to pose as my dead son to drive me crazy, committed treason, and tried to link me to a theft of plutonium by Quraci extremists... you think right." Slade shrugged.

"No, not with that claustrophobia, you wouldn't." Slade said it matter-of-factly, neither dismissive or overly sympathetic. "Especially not mass-transit. Good thing I hate it too, I guess. Too easy to forget where I am, and... over-react."

"Yeah... he had it comin'." Jason said, a little snap of brightness in his eyes. "One thing to hurt somebody, 'nother thing entirely to bring somebody's kids into it."

Jay shrugged, "I don't remember the last time I travelled... Talia'd drug me before we went anywhere, and so'd Hush, if I gotta I can just do that again." he hated being drugged, but he could deal with it...

Probably.

"Yeah, you flipping out on a subway wouldn't be pretty." he said, "'Specially since even when you're 'civillian' you're probably a walkin' talkin' arsenal."

"Exactly," Slade agreed darkly, then watched the brat's face for long moments. "You won't beat the fear by drugging yourself into submission to it--which doesn't mean you need to do something stupid trying to beat it, either."

He had to chuckle at the truth of the boy's last statement. "It's not, and I am. Old soldiers don't get to be that way by being complacent, or unarmed."

"I'm not doing anything stupid." Jason said, then paused to rethink his statement, because cage fighting was, by definition, stupid, "Not doing anything stupid about getting shut into small or not-so-small spaces." he amended.

"No, old soldiers don't ever really stop being who they are, I guess." he said softly.

Good soldiers die.

"Good. It takes time... and it doesn't always heal at all," Slade told him. "Just depends on how you try and get through it."

"You all right, brat?" he asked at the way the boy went pale.
